so yea, this thread again.
Just recently i saw that they do events for other "underground" genres. Dudes in Marketing are getting smart.
I as well was super surprised when I saw Basterd Noise working with scion. Old man need to eat.

I hope all you idiots who were defending Scion before are turning to the correct side of the argument now, given how events have been unfolding in the last year.

Defending Magrudergrind's choice is the same thing as defending Scion in my eyes.

Someone on the operation grindcore facebook page was trying to justify it, or saying how scion really doesn't matter, and I was the only one arguing. Fucking passive aggressive posers all around.

Cheapest shit ass attempted buyout of a culture ever. "Go after them, they have never seen money before. They don't even pay themselves!"

This is from another forum, but I'd like to post it here as well: Okay, sometimes even the best of us don't get the sarcasm to come across, or we fail to pick up on what was being put down. Scion targets 18-24 year old buyers, and has had THE MOST SUCCESSFUL BRAND LAUNCH IN THE HISTORY OF NORTH AMERICAN AUTO SALES. Scion uses alternative media to promote. Its not just metal, its garage, funk, electronic music, and other shit I hate. And the zines, shows, and records that they put out have helped them BREAK SALES RECORDS. THEY KNOW EXACTLY WHAT THE FUCK THEY ARE DOING. Scion sells "incomplete" cars, and their marketing research has found that owners spend as much in the first 36 months of ownership to customize the car as to buy it. While people might think of it as FREE SHIT MAAAN, they are part of a larger machine that is working better than conventional advertising that is now ineffective on 18-24 year-olds. People might still look for that purse or jeans or watch or haircut that really lets the world know who their are, they have started to look for themselves to define that image instead of listening to advertising. So Scion has found a way to put its product into culture away from the mainstream and just let the consumer discover it. They don't think they are being sold anything, they think they found out about a car that is based on Toyota engineering (and is probably a smarter purchase than any new north american car). I think that most people could benefit from some media literacy, and its really disappointing that bands I really enjoy both musically and as people such as Magrudergrind, Noisear, Bastard Noise, Mind Eraser, Neurosis, Brutal Truth, and many others have signed on with this materialistic advertising juggernaut.

Well said, I didn't know that about the incomplete cars. The bigger picture is a bit clearer now.

What's happened in the past year? We aren't "affected" by scion at all. Well I have some friends in LA, where a lot of Scion shows are. There are a lot of young kids in the scene that see the free show as the norm, and aren't willing to pay for a basement show at all. So its possible that the "next generation" of punks could become spoiled by this free show system. I have some more to say about this but I have to drive an hour to band practice... Also, Scions do come with a cassette option, I done googled it.

Well, cassette option, yeah I can see that, but do they come standard in the average model of their car? I doubt anybody does that anymore. PS: My drive to band practice is about 40 minutes, you aren't alone in that boat, bud.

Weren't you also picking up Dooley in Torrington and also picking up Grizz somewhere along the line or something ridiculous like that?
My practice drive will get longer soon enough. I go to my drummer's house to practice now, his wife is going to get transferred to the Cambridge plant at some point and they've been looking at houses around Lexington/Concord/Bedford, MA... so soon enough I'll be driving north of Boston for band practice. Weehaw.

Fucking passive aggressive posers all around. i think i 'liked' your response to that facebook post. that blog's audience and authors sometimes make me really sad about whats coming down the pipes the next few years. they have no regard for ethos or aesthetics. evidently if you dont "change your sound", you can't sell out. ps wormrot sucks

I thought Abuse was awesome, Dirge upon further listening sounded really forced and forgettable. Haven't bothered listening to any new material, haven't listened to them at all whatsoever since I heard they were working with Scion anyway.

scions coming with cassette option is almost entirely because of the recent resurgance in using odd media formats as a way to have your uber artsy consumers purchase your product, which is sad really, i can record straight to a tape, play same tape in a tape player connected to a recorder, record the sound i want, and produce things entirely analog style, and now people are using the format i'm preferring for functionalities sake and using it to look super retro.
seriously not stoked about the bands promoting it either, one of the dudes from thou told me they used the money they got from a scion fest to bring a band over from europe to tour, which is positive motion with some losers cash, but it is also giving credit to that asshole for something that could've been done else wise, some way, some how.
