Sonic violence - everything (someone should re-release both albums and the Ep's)
I like magrudergrind alot. I think there best stuff is Rehashed and the S/T. Will, why dont you like the new album, is it because of the odd samples??? I think that the new one has alot less filler then rehashed.

stupid hip hop samples, stupid powerviolence parts. I know magrudergrind has always been a mix of pv and grind, but for a while it was more grind than pv. the self titled album is definitely way more pv. I fucking HATE "bridge burner."

Nope, that was a straight transition. The split with Shitstorm is actually the most boring stuff to me. I like really eclectic songs. Give me an example of what yer calling 'eclectic songs' or grind... I really like bands that can wear many hats and writee songs that sound very different from each other, but can also tie it together really well. i also like bands that can write a decent riff (and let's face it, Bridge Burner is a song with well written riffs) doing NOTHING but blast beats gets so old and takes away the impact. Most of MG's stuff is a good example of what I mean but truth be told I'm more of a powerviolence guy. Bands like Iron Lung, Lack of Interest, etc. typically hit what I'm looking for more often. In the realm of grind I'd say Fetus Eaters is a really good example of a band that keeps the sound fairly punk but adds flavor to it. I also LOVE Phobia's output in the more recent years though people here seem to disagree.

Actually I'm almost positive Mough was on Rehashed and RJ was on self-titled.
That being said, the self-titled is my favorite and I always thought of that one as being the most straight-forward grind sounding.

We probably have varying ideas of what straight-forward grind sounds like, which is cool.

Best magrudergrind=Godstomper split and Sanitys Dawn split. S/T is good because the recording is awesome, but the songs didn't really stick with me as much.

I'd rather hear something not straight-forward, a lot of times my favorite bands really fudge up the lines.

I just think the recordings on those 2 7"s are abrasive as fuck. I prefer that to a well produced recording anyday.

I actually agree with you those two are the best, the split with A Warm Gun is pretty awesome too.

I like all of them for different reasons. I guess the self-titled just comes across as the one they'd be most satisfied with, nothing they'd change etc.

I like the split with Shitstorm because it's just straight up ripping grind, and is the right size/ quality chunk o' grind to be memorable. But I like so many kinds of music, for me it's about finding bands I like, no matter the genre. Actually I'm almost positive Mough was on Rehashed and RJ was on self-titled. That being said, the self-titled is my favorite and I always thought of that one as being the most straight-forward grind sounding. We probably have varying ideas of what straight-forward grind sounds like, which is cool. Yep, I think we do. Cuz I'd call the earlier stuff the straight forward grind. The new one is more metal-grind - obviously way more influenced by (at least the sound of) Entombed, Nasum, and even some sludgecore-doom. I don't find it to be very 'power-violence' though. Cuz my definition of PV is probably different from others too.

I'm not saying I don't like any bands that play their genres in their purest form... but they just don't hold my attention so much. The thing where Will and I disagree here is that he doesn't like the fact that MG is a hybrid band and that's one of my favorite things about them. When you get equal parts of two subgenres blended together smoothly, it's almost like listening to two bands at the same time.
I usually do have a problem with math metal and other bands that try to mash up a whole bunch of unrelated genres into one band though. Their transitions don't make any sense and trying to mix metal with something like jazz makes me break out in hives. The bands that do it right are the ones writing the riffs that sound like they could be part of the sound of more than one style... hence why I like the crossover scene so much.

I get it. Not saying you don't like some straight genre bands. And a generic-ass boring grind band is just as boring as a generic-ass blues band or DM or hard rock band. It's all personal taste.
Let's not even go to the metal-genre X crossover route. Those bands could be eliminated from existance and it wouldn't effect my music library one bit. LOL. I had two roomies that were in a metal-funk-rap-reggae-grunge band some years ago, and tho they were talented guys, that was one of the worst, least coherent bands I've ever heard. And we had to listen to them practice in our house. Shivers me spiney just thinking about that.

I tend to be a purist when it comes to musical genres, but that's not to say I don't like some experimentation. My impression of bands playing grind that don't stick to grind is that they just don't know what they're doing so the throw in some other oddball riffs to try and make it sound interesting, but they're really just not that good.

I was talking about bands like DRI, Cryptic Slaughter, Excel, Bones Brigade, Municipal Waste, Crucial Unit, etc... I don't get it.

I guess I never looked at it that way, but it does make perfect sense if you're talking about adding noodly go-nowhere guitar parts that a lot of bands in the math metal category use. However, if it's all kick ass then I have no problems with it. I like grind and I like thrash. If a grind band can throw in a really kick ass thrash part in their song and make it sound like a fluent transition, or vice versa, it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I think my favourite MG is the split with Shitstorm, but it's been a while since i listened to that. Haven't heard Rehashed or s/t much, but i really don't like the guitar tone on the s/t. Too much Rotten Sound/Nasum/etc.
But anyway, it'be been a black metal week here mostly: Darkspace - I Darkspace - II Darkspace - III Horna - Sanojesi Äärelle Paysage d'Hiver - Kristall & Isa Paysage d'Hiver - Schattengang Paysage d'Hiver - s/t Panopticon - Collapse Hypo Christians - Terror During Prayer Warfair? - Earmageddon And some Nargaroth (hah), Satanic Warmaster (hahah), Moonblood and stuff like that.

I wouldn't call them NSBM, though most of the finnish BM scene is more or less leaning into that direction. Not necessarily NS, but patriotic, racist or just plain stupid. Satanic Warmaster on the other hand is quite clearly NSBM, no matter how much he tries to deny that when caught, like when newspapers here really got interested something like a year ago, hah. Both are from my hometown actually. There is also a NSBM band called Hammer there, btw. But i have to admit that some of the more or less suspicious BM is really good, one more reason to illegally download mp3s.

I really don't have any idea what you're talking about at all. I was talking about bands like DRI, Cryptic Slaughter, Excel, Bones Brigade, Municipal Waste, Crucial Unit, etc... I don't get it. The comment was referring to your dislike of math metal and metal-jazz etc. stuff. I know what crossover is. I was there for that slice of the scene. I still have all the records and flyers and zines and stuff. I tend to be a purist when it comes to musical genres, but that's not to say I don't like some experimentation. My impression of bands playing grind that don't stick to grind is that they just don't know what they're doing so the throw in some other oddball riffs to try and make it sound interesting, but they're really just not that good. Now your talking about modern subgenres of grind, really. Almost all of the 'original' grind bands played at different tempos - punky, crusty, all flavors of metal, slow, painfully slow, blur or noise. Straight on grind just evolved out of that, just like pure noisecore or sludge-doom. Or the speedy-slow part-random noises & samples sound of powerviolence. Actually I'm almost positive Mough was on Rehashed and RJ was on self-titled. Missed that the first time around. The guitarist change would explain a lot of the change in riffs and tone.
