it's too late for onions. if you want to grow peppers, you'd better get started now, too.

something is eating small holes in my plants' leaves and also eating them from the edges. they prefer my basil and peppers, the squash and tomatoes are in good shape. any ideas what this could be (caterpillars?)? any organic pesticide alternatives i could find easily? help!! they are destroying everything fast!

Garlic barrier, but I think you might have to order that. Or you could try making your own.

1 part dave's insanity hot sauce, 3-4 parts water. most bugs don't like it. if you have a great blender that will totally juice garlic that would probably help too.

with spewtilator dissolving I'm thinking of taking up growing some stuff in my free time (what's that?). Is there anything in particular I can plant now or in the coming months?

obviously its kind of late for starting from seed. you can still grow zucchini, squash varieties until early fall down here. you have time for some herbs and peppers too. squash vine borer lifecycle shoudl be over in most places, it's not here but i am battling off the last. you could start cabbage, kale for the fall in the next couple weeks i think.

I didn't even get any black raspberries at my house, it was too hot.

was thinking 5 gallon buckets so it's all up off the ground. Not a bad idea! Met some punx in 'Nooga with that kind of set-up. They had some massive avocado and in tomato plants coming in. Fern's basil went crazy in buckets as well..

Moving into a new house again that actually has a yard I can use, so I ordered some seeds. I was looking for kind of odd things, because it was a specialty website, what sites/sources do you guys use?
So far I bought: Broccoli Rabe, Romanesco broccoli, Scorzonera or black Salsify, Watermelon Radish, Parsley root, Ramson, Leeks, Cardoons and Kale. I basically only ordered shit/varietals that I thought local farmers wouldn't do. I guess the cardoons are perennial and will go for like 5 years in a warm enough area. So I may end up growing them at the restaurant when we get our interior grow lights set up.

Yeah, I thought about the farmer's market, but I really wanted to get the jump on things this year and ours don't start until kind of late around here. I'll check those others.

Comstock, Ferre, & Co.cuz they've been in business for 200 years, are local, and do all heirloom stuff developed for this climate. I occasionally get stuff from Seed Saver's Exchange, and a few other places. I always get my seed potatoes from Wood Prairie Farm.

I've never put any effort into growing food, but i have a fat-ass cactus/succulent/bromeliad garden that has a couple of pineapples. I've also got a valencia orange tree that fruits almost year-round.

Bought a few more things from Johnny's; shiso, tomatoes, jalapenos and nasturtium. This other seed catalog sells 200 praying mantis eggs for $10, which I'm seriously considering, because that just sounds awesome.
