My younger step brother killed a deer and gave us some burger and cubesteak recently. Good stuff!

Venison is great, it is practically all I ate growing up. It's a lot healthier and you don't have to concern yourself with all the steroids and whatnot from the factory cows. Plus, I'd save a lot of money with a freezer full of deer meat and organs.

I considered posting this in the "twitter update" thread, but this might be appropriate here. It's pretty interesting.
Also, has anyone actually used "compost tea" (a.k.a. dookie water) on their crops/soil before? If so, is there any noticeable difference in your yield/pests/diseases occurring? I was able to gather that the guy in the video above is doing it wrong, and you should use an aerated thing with fresh compost and molasses to encourage microbial growth, but is it really worth all the effort?

my dad does it. he's got a setup with an aerator and uses a sock full of worm casings.

Also, does anyone hunt? No one in my family really brings me venison anymore and I've been considering taking it up. I do. we eat a lot of rabbits, some squirrels and woodchucks, and venison. i buy turkey tags every year, but have never shot a turkey. my neighbor gives us goose meat, too. this is basically the only meat we eat here, plus our chickens.

Gonna order seeds soon, I'm moving into a place with a larger backyard area for planting and it's out in the county so I can raise some duckies. Going for khaki Campbells, since they can lay over 300 eggs a year. Will, you ever try growing mushrooms side by side with your vegetables? I think I'm going to try that method this year with oysters along with the log method for chicken mushrooms.

dude, I have tried growing mushrooms in my garden beds. The problem was that we had a huge fucking drought, so the mycelium never took. I plan on trying again, but not sure when that's gonna happen.

Yeah, that could be an issue. Paul stamets seems to have great results, but he's trying to prove that point, so we'll see. I've read a lot more since my previous shrooming attempt.

Moved again, still shit luck with growing. So many fucking honey locust trees I can't get enough sun. Gonna try and knock one down this year to clear some skyline. Looking into a lot more perennials these days, started some alpine strawberries from seed last year, which is surprising because I always heard strawberries were a bitch from seed. Also got a few lovage plants (like perennial celery leaf) and other herbs so that's fun.
Got a few shiitake and oyster mushrooms from my logs, the chickens never went anywhere but I forgot to incubate the logs anyway so into the hugel bed they went.
Anyone else growing fun stuff?
