i wrote up a little (" ") list of information/reviews on pressing plants, printers, mastering plants, and other places i've used in the past/currently use for pressing records and cds. it can be found here. hopefully some people find it useful. if people have used other plants and can give some info on them, or want to add more information to what i've already posted that would be sweet.

Awesome, great idea. I'm just trying to get a label off the ground here, so this should be helpful.

I was actually planning on using Erika records for a Black Hole of Calcutta 6", would you advise against that? Because that's the impression I got from the review.

email or post in thread would work. i was thinking of making it into a webpage. i can't afford to host it on it's own domain, but justsaynorecords.com/resources or something i suppose would suffice.
your experiences would be a great addition to the list!!!

I was actually planning on using Erika records for a Black Hole of Calcutta 6", would you advise against that? Because that's the impression I got from the review. i tried to make it clearer in the post, but i think if you just wanted a custom sized record it wouldn't be a problem. even still, if you wanted custom size + etching on the back it would probably be fine. what we originally wanted was what did us in, i think. and what made it worse is them telling us it could be done. we wanted etching and music on both sides. imagine a regular 7" and then add on two inches of etching on the outside. super custom (pretty much done before... look at the Ampere / Funeral Diner 9"... and that was pressed at Erika... so i'm not sure what gives). we are just promised time and time again it could be done and a good bulk of the delays were due to that. there were several other delays that i might suggest you expect, and maybe just be prepared for them (and lack of communication). but maybe they just got fed up with us/were scared to tell us they had no answers.

Yo, as far as MY experiences,
ROSS ELLIS - you wont find cheaper sleeves in canada, THEY DA MAN
rip-v : got quotes, very expensive, doesnt do his own plates n shit, might as well go with someone else

duplication.ca goes through rip-v to press, but do they do mastering/plating at all? that sucks he doesn't do them. i don't think anywhere in canada does plates, then?
also, still slowly working on a webpage... it's coming!

Duplication.ca is shit - they are fucken dicks, dude, they sent me an invoice once (which i brought) came to pick up my shit, price had changed, without anyone advising me. wouldnt let me leave with my stuff unless i paid the extra
a few cd plants in quebec claim to do vinyl but they just are middle men
in the case of DUP.ca they are middle men to a semi middle man
rip V : THEY HAVE the presses, i seen em myself. quality of vinyls is good and turnaround alright (from a friend i herd) but the fact they get plates OUTSOURCED just kills any potetial good prices theyd have
i would go through VINYL GURU if you are from canada, as they work with multiple companies, and are canadian based and can work arrengements as lets say shipping costs, to include custom fees - which is 100$ for 500 -7s..... 200-300 for 500 LPs
which is also a big reason why records from labels in canada are pricier than from us ( Ship + customs.)
--------------
owns again , i vouch for ROSS ELLIS, just give em yer "label name" so you sound like a company thats legit, and they wont ask questions

hm. thanks for the info frank. looks like i'll be steering away from dup/rip-v.
based on your experience with vinyl guru, is it equal/cheaper/more expensive to go through him vs. go through aardvark/united or another US plant directly?

Anything going across the border and having bills attached to it and over 100$ will have customs...so you end up having to pay shipping both ways for that, plus the customs, and canada u.s. shipping is ALOT more than just usa - usa... so in the end it adds up dramaticallyowns again , i vouch for ROSS ELLIS, just give em yer "label name" so you sound like a company thats legit, and they wont ask questions If you're out of the country they will still need a business or personal SSN to do printing whether you have a label name or not. as far as in country goes, none of that required, i sugest going with yer local broker

Imprint is the broker for Ross Ellis in the US, still cheaaap The only thing at ross ellis is GATEFOLDS is MMAAAAD expensive...regular sleeves are great though *** As far as guru goes, i didnt finalize anything with em YET, but got a quote in the past for something that didnt work out, but got em to equalize musicol's price, but get regular 5 week turnaround (so obviously he wasnt sending it to MUSICOL hahaha) cool guys, you can ring em up and deal em , bust their balls a bit. having worked in a purchasing type job in the past, im not affraid to ask for better deals, or include customs in my shipping (since they are brokers, they need customs brokers too...so its inexpensive for them to cover the fees) to give you an idea, 300 can become 26$... if you dont ask, they wont do it though haha but yeah , its stupid tat just cause you pay someone to fill out paperwork, it ends up costing a fraction of price

doing a DLP through SAMO MEDIA (canada) soon. samomedia.com/vinyl/news/note that Gord (from Deranged Records) works there. FYI it seems they now beat IMPRINT on LP cover price (as of my last conversation w/him). i will let all know how it goes. new brokers showing up all of a sudden is interesting stuff. and... i will be using Lucky Lacquers (by way of Rainbo) to do the next 7" by THE ASSASSINATORS. more news on that as well.

Samo's been around for a couple years now but last i checked their website was still incomplete. glad they're up and running now. had no idea Gord worked there, who do they broker with?
I'm assuming their covers must be done with Ross-Ellis, too, no?

I've used Archer before since I live like 30 minutes away and can drive down and pick up the records myself. Never really had any problems or anything.

Would you say the sound/vinyl quality is better than United? They're pretty similar in price (with Archer being slightly more).

The vinyl quality seemed fine to me. I always got the plates made outside of the plant, through Aardvark for example, so I don't know how the sound quality would be if you had the Archer guys master it.
