I had a dream last night that I was walking through the woods and Rape Revenge was playing half on a large hill and also had members on the bottom and they broke out in a cover of nausea's "cyber god" aka the only good nausea song and they made it part way through and the cops showed up and in a sign of inner band unity all members linked arms and made it into their van without any pig intervention and various random crust punks annoyed the cops with whatever inner dream antics they were up to at the time and overall it was a very strange and confusing experience kinda like reading this strange and confusing run on sentence.

"Rape Revenge is a vegan straight edge queer feminist band from Calgary Alberta. They have been together for two years and have released a self titled 7”, a self released a live cassette, and are now have their brand new record, Paper Cage 7”, out on To Live A Lie Records. Rape Revenge has only played all ages shows (and a few guerilla parking lot and laundromat shows) since their inception, and is dedicated to the DIY all ages community. Members of Rape Revenge are involved in an all ages collective venue called Local Library, volunteer at the Distress Centre’s Out-Is-Ok (a crisis line for the LGBTQQ2 Community), are members of the Rock 4 Choice Collective and the Calgary Zine Library Collective, and also volunteer for Food Not Bombs, The Good Life Community Bike Shop, and a shelter for sexually exploited youth. Members of Rape Revenge also work as addictions counselors, mental health advocates, and also at a locally run organic grocery store. Rape Revenge writes songs about queer issues, women’s rights, child sexual exploitation, veganism, and anarchy. Their new EP features their fastest material to date."

This is a pretty painful read. I have no problems with any of the ideas but it kinda bothers me that there making it a huge point that you know all this stuff about them. Its like there trying to say there better then you. The music isn't bad.

I don't think any part of it seems like they're talking down to you. If something is important to you, make it known. That's one of the reasons I'm into punk rock at all. I dig this band, the vocals are fucking gnarly.

I totaly agree that if something is important to you make it known. But theres somthing about the write up that I dont like. I will buy this 7inch, music seems cool. The vocals are sick shit indeed.

Going to have to agree with Seth. If you are incredible person that devotes your time to others I think highly of you, but you know what makes you look even better? Modesty.
I'll check out the music when I get home.

I think these aspects of them are outside the mainstream and should be celebrated as what they are about. I also took 99% of that info from some fest's bio of them.

I was gonna say, you probably took that from New Direction Fest. ;D Those NDF organizers are huge into spotlighting the activism of their bands. More power to 'em, I say.

Vegan straight edgers don't have anything better to do than be activists, I guess.

These recordings are heaps better than the other shit I've heard from them. I was a bit put off by that bio too but the tunes rule.

RR rules supemely hard and it bums me out that their passion for what they sing about puts people off. Awesome people, awesome band, absolutely amazing live, I hear they're booking a US tour and if you don't go see them you will be fucking up badly.

Don't you just get the vibe from reading that bio that Rape Revenge are the type of folks who would be against the death penalty due to holding the belief that acts of revenge such as execution are not the same as rehabilitation and don't actually solve anything?
That name makes me wince every time I see it. I keep having this mental image of a rape victim turning around and finding some way to rape the other person back who abused them, which wouldn't actually solve anything, it would just make for creepy role reversal and I would have to call the sanity of everyone involved into question.
I'm sure this wasn't the intention of anyone in the band to create a name that gives off that vibe, I'm sure they're all really nice folks, and maybe the band is even good too (I haven't listened yet), but I will never, ever see the name "Rape Revenge" and not cringe at it, and anyone who's read this board even not so in-depth can tell I'm not exactly a PC warrior.
Anyway, just my two cents. Glad to see this band they have going is working out well for them.

It just makes me think of I Spit on Your Grave. or the last house on the left or all the italian rip offs made in the seventies it was pretty much a full blown genre of movie for a while

Yeah, they took their name from a specific pseudo-subgenre of exploitation films, it wasn't a term they coined themselves. I basically agree with everything Bryan said. They're definitely a band who considers their lyrics and message as important or more important than the music, which unfortunately often spurs a lotta drunken 'Har har bitch, get back in the kitchen' heckling at their shows. They're all very approachable and friendly people though (and Matt is one of the most passionate fastcore nerds you'll ever meet, haha). Usually bands that are this overtly political turn me off by playing shitty crust or folk punk or 90's-ish Ebullition shit, but I'm really into their tunes too. I could see some people on this forum not liking them, they play pretty not-straightforward music (although I haven't heard the new recordings, they have a new lineup).

Bryan Funck told me we (Seeds of Rape) should do a split with Rape Revenge a while back.
