Yo, this is momo from Blue Period records and we just finished pressing our first release. Needless to say, we're pretty stoked on putting more bands out. We're just a couple of college kids putting out hardcore albums in our basement so we're doing some super limited hand numbered runs (in the 100s) as of now. If you guys are interested, shoot us an email at blueperiodrecords@gmail.com or visit our myspace at myspace.com/blueperiodrecords. (also check out Progress at myspace.com/progress906)
hope to hear from some good dudes, jerks need not apply.

Are you seriously charging $10 for (what is presumably) a CDR?

yes and no, they're 10ppd and they're professionally printed (not cd-rs). The reason why they're a bit on the costly side is because we did a limited run of 100 with cd wallet printing and that ran us about $3.44 a piece (we could've opted for the cheaper jewel case). But I definitely do see your point there. It looks like $9ppd might be a fairer price.
Anyway, it looks like I could definitely use some pointers about running a label.

Pointers: only morons pay 9 bucks for a CD unless it's international postage.

i generally get 50 cents or a dollar profit on my releases, which is usually used for postage on trades or if i'm lucky goes towards my next release.

swilliam, how do you figure costs in your releases? This release will just barely break even at $7 for EP (recording/pressing). I thought it'd be fair to charge an extra $2 for the shipping. Do you lose money on most of your releases?

I take the total cost (pressing cost, printing cost, shipping of royalty copies to bands) and divide by total copies minus band royalties (so if i press 500 and give 100 to the band, my total is 400). when i do a release, every dollar I spent isn't accounted for that comes back to me, so depends on how you define losing money on a release. I look at releasing records as a hobby, even if it's an expensive one.
$2 shipping does seem fair, and I don't give bands money for recording cost, they are on their own on that part.

ah, that makes sense. I'm reimbursing the band for their recording/mastering process which figures into how much I'm selling these for. I do admit that $7 seems a bit steep for an EP but I feel like it's a dick move to make the band pay for the recording.

as someone who has played in bands, i've never expected that the label pay our recording costs.

Copies of the record pays back recording. Also when I did a pro CD-R I think it was a dollar a CD for the actual pressing part of it, did cheapo covers and cd slip sleeves for another $.50. Turned out pretty good, just sold them for cost to get them out there.
