Quote from Dan of Profane Existence:
Several hundred dollars and almost three weeks after starting this project, the much talked about DIY community distro is now up and running. The full url is...
www.coopdistro.com
The whole system is basically set up like eBay, where sellers can post auctions or list stuff for sale (the maximum posting time is 56 days, but it can auto-relist up to 15 times). You also have your choice of listing individual items or open a store. A basic store is free and can have up to 1000 items listed. There is also a premium featured store option at an extra monthly cost. The selling fee for using the site is 1.5% of the total sales each month. There are no fees for basic listings, reserve price auctions, "buy now" options, or image hosting. The only up-front cost is that all SELLERS must pay an annual $5 fee for ID verification purposes (by Paypal or credit card). Your account will be credited $5 towards your first bill.
Besides lower selling fees than eBay, the new store has a lot of cool features like SSL secure login and Members Area. It also has built-in SSL secure payment gateways for Paypal and a host of other online payment services and credit card gateways (making this way cheaper and easier to set up than most ecommerce / web store systsm). There is also a user feedback and rating system and a bulk auction lister. Basically it's like a mini eBay but waaaaay cheaper in terms of fees.
The site isn't perfect and I am still setting up a lot of the features, re-writing the TOS, FAQs etc. The software cost a lot of the money out of the box and I am trying to save cash by doing as many modification on my own as possible. However, there are some features I would like to add in the future and we will have to pay to have them implemented (this is where your 1.5% comes in). Improvements I hope to see soonish are advanced shipping calculations and the addition of a reference catalog of all DIY / punk / hardcore releases ever made.
Well, we have a start now anyway. So... go ahead and register and start using the system. If you find any bugs please start a new thread in this forum and I will work on fixing them as quickly as I can.
I've got my store up, hopefully this catches on, could be pretty awesome.
