My second Indian recipe, but this will make anyone shutter, because I did it without many real ingredients and I glanced at a recipe before making it and then looked back at it now and it says its not based off an authentic dish.
All that aside, here is my ghetto dahl.
Some amount, maybe a cup and a half dried lentils. Strain and clean them, put them in a bowl with an inch or two of water on above the level of them. Bring to a boil and then cover and put heat on low. Cook them for 30-45 minutes. Throw some salt in there for fun.
Dice a tomato, a jalapeno, smash a clove of garlic, and crush some coriander seed (why this is in my ghetto recipe, well I bought them at the farmers market for $.99 and I will hardly ever use them so this is a good excuse). Without a mortar and pestle, I crushed them with a hammer.
Strain some of the water out. I kept the original water instead of blanching them with new water, why? I don't know, water seemed thickened from cooking and had a nice dark brown color. Maybe its unsanitary to cook with but I know no better.
Throw all that junk you cut and crushed into the pot. Throw some more salt. Throw a good amount of cumin, a little turmeric, and I threw in a little garam masala (which I have thanks to my other Indian dish, you can buy the spice at Whole Foods, but it isn't the cheapest thing). Cook this all up for about 15 minutes covered, add water if it gets dry, make sure the bottom does not burn! After this, it should be ready to serve! Probably should cook some basmati rice or some kind of starch to put with it, I ate it by itself.
