The good Nirvana songs are the ones where they try to be The Melvins (i.e., "Negative Creep"). I actually wish that Kurt Cobain lived the extra few weeks that would have put him in Greg Sage's studio to record Leadbelly songs outside of his label's knowledge. And on a somewhat similar note, I've been an avid Primus fan since I was 14. This is not guilty pleasure music. I had so much fun when I saw Primus last summer. Oh really that was planned? I never heard that story...

its nice to see people admitting music that's not all like gangster rap or just other forms of "heavy shit", I think it's really close minded. Oh, and fuck black metal! haha. But you can imagine the shit that would come up on a message board thread like this for a black metal/doom label...It would be all fuckin' goth and electro ambient ministry worship DXM driven pussy poser nonsense. Nothing fun=Death.

Two handed finger tapping guitar solos.

Dude, solos rule, even wild as shit two handed finger tapping solos BUT THEY HAVE TO BE DONE TASTEFULLY. I don't want to hear you wank your shit for 5 goddamn minutes, I want the song to be ripping along and come to that perfect place and you just fuckin' wail for just the right amount of time and then slam right back into the rest of the song. Solos used as tools to make the right song extra rad are cool. Solos used to show off suck.
Case in point:

I've been listening to a lot of fu manchu radio on pandora at work lately, and every once in a while Helmet comes on and I still get into it even though they are a bit nu-metalish. I also love Tegan and Sara, I don't know if I've said that here yet.

Haha Ryan, I'm not here to bag on guitar solos as a whole by any means, Spinach closes out our set with one of the douchiest solos ever for fuck's sake. But I can't help but feel like a supreme douche for absolutely loving every single note of Eruption in a 100% non-ironic sense.

Most of the music I listen to half of you would shake your heads at.
I spent all day listening to The Cure today. I REALLY like RUSH. I LOVE synth pop. Bring it all on.
It's ok, do a split seven inch with Deche-Charge and you get a pass to listen to total "guilty pleasure" music.

I definitely don't consider fu manchu a guilty pleasure, that shit straight rocks. Helmet is definitely nu-metalish though like I said. It's funny though regarding tegan and Sara, most of their fans I know are dudes. All the guys in Have Fun are the ones who got me into them actually.

Strap it on by Helmet is 100% essential. Tho Meantime and Betty are pretty rocking as well. Meantime has the hits but strap it on has the tude.

Big Black. Although I've never been a fan of this band, the "Bulldozer" 12" has grown on me lately.
