I had just been planning on running a new head into my Marshall cab. Do you really have to use different speakers based on whether you have a tube head or a solid state head?

who said anything about a different cab? ryann was just suggesting that if yo kept your ss head, and had 2 cabs, you could run 2 half stacks.

My Sunn 200s is only 40 watts, and I can barely get it up past 3 to practice and don't think I've ever cranked it past 7. You'd probably be able to get away with the or15 and would definitely get that awesome tube saturation without having to play in a damn stadium. Have you played any orange amps?

Never played through one of those amps, but I've seen them live enough times where I know they sound silky smooth.

i second that you try an or15. considering you dont have any other guitars, that will get crazy loud and have the best possible tone. i have a 15w amp, and with everything dimed it sounds like nothing other than cranked tubes can. for my appoication though, its not quite loud enough, but just barely. i love jamming around with it though.

I'm forgetting too... aren't tube amps the opposite of solid state amps, where the louder you crank a solid state amp, the muddier everything becomes, where a tube amp has more clarity the louder it gets?

that would seem to vary depending on the amp. i'm actually surprised that you're so hot on orange amps bcause i think of them as being the opposite of tight sounding.

Depends on the amp, but generally tube amps sound "better" when you crank them. That's why unless you're playing a huge venue without PA assistance, 50w is usually plenty when it comes to power and headroom. With 100+ watt amps, by the time you get your power tubes to saturate, your amp is already way too loud, and most of that power just gets lost as it is converted to heat. Again, it DOES depend on which amp you're using, but this is generally what happens.

There could be a number of reasons for this, didn't set the head/pedal the same way I do now, recorded by a guy who doesn't listen to that type of music... but I think replacing the head entirely would be the biggest step in the right direction.

Any of you have experience with the Eastwood Hi-Flyer guitars? They look to be an exact copy of the Univox ones. Been wanting a solid guitar with p90s, and I can find these used online for next to nothing.

Mike, start playing around with used heads at guitar center (place sucks). Best way to get a feel for whats out there. A solid state head can be just as smooth as a tube head just depends. Keep your options open and you will find the golden ticket.

Keep your options open and you will find the golden ticket. it's all true. i've been playing only solid state for about 6 years, theyre cool in that you never have to fix them and you dont have to play at an insane volume for tubes to break up. i can use hellacious distortion without losing any clarity. also, don't ever buy equipment in an attempt to replicate someone else's tone.

also, don't ever buy equipment in an attempt to replicate someone else's tone. THIS x 1000000. Unless you're phenomenal at replicating playing technique, you'll always come up a little short. Of course, there are a lot of guitarists whose tone I admire and would love to harness, but I would try to do something a little different with it and make it my own.

VH/SS series Ampeg guitar amp users: any speaker/cab recommendations for these particular amps? I was thinking of getting a 4x12 with something like v30s, and swapping out two of them for two of the Swamp Thangs I have in my other cab, but other recommendations would be highly appreciated.

Welp, my Shockwave is fried. Looks like the purchase of that Ampeg was a good idea outside of just wanting one to have one.

Looks like I was wrong about the amp handling a 2 ohm mono cab, seems it does actually need two four ohm cabs to see a 2 ohm load. Plus, I've played bass outta that thing super loud for a while now, that probably didn't help it. Whoops, haha. Gonna tinker around with it more and see if it's at all salvageable, but it's looking like it's done for. Definitely going to rewire that cab this weekend.

Hey friends (most specifically Kevin) what AMT Legend II should I get?

well they all sound like the amp they are supposed to sound like. So get the one that sounds like the amp you are going for. I use the P2 because I want the 5150 distortion. The Engl one is a bit smooth for Oily Menace, but I use it for more rock n roll sounds.
Soldano is interesting, because those amps sound amazing, but I haven't heard it specifically. Tons of nerds demo those on youtube. NERDS.

I didn't get a good explanation from the tech who fixed my shockwave, but some friends fried it with a bad speaker cable and it was a cheap and easy fixed.
