No fucking way did I ever think I'd find a Cardiacs fan on this forum. Favorite band, hands down. I ordered 200 dollars worth of their stuff from the UK a few years ago, since they don't have any North American distribution. Since I first heard them I don't think I've ever gone more than a week or two without listening to them, and when I do I tend to listen to them for hours at a time. Strangely enough, though I consider them my favourite band, I've never gotten super obsessive about learning all the history/ triva etc like I have with other groups. I have made Cardiacs mixes for many friends, all but one thought they were uttter shit. If Tim fully recovers and they play again, I would do shameful, shameful things to get to England to see them. I also listen to lots of stuff everyone here would hate. Lots of cheesy, clubby electronic stuff, new wave, prog, experimental and abstract hip hop. I've also always really liked Weird Al for some reason. Definitely a band that gets my attention for hours at a time only every few weeks or so. I've dreamt of beginning a blast-beat ridden version of the Cardiacs for awhile now and in fact, most of the unreleased (and generally unlearned) songs I wrote for the Methheads before we called it quits were definitely along those lines. That sounds like my ideal group. I don't listen to a whole lot of prog (I do like some, just not a huge freak for it) but I like a lot of prog-influenced experimental punk stuff. Uz Jsme Doma, 2227, Victims Family, NoMeansNo, Koenji Hyakkei, Pigment Vehicle... Before I started getting into fast hardcore that was almost exclusively what I listened to, and I'm still really into most of it. I've also remained a huge Primus fans since I was in grade 6. Les Claypool's recent jam band shit I don't care for, but every Primus album that isn't Anti-pop still gets lots of rotation at my house.

Not a guilty pleasure but on the topic of Wu-Tang. I listen to a lot of ODB at the library while shelving (headphones on, of course). I always worry that I'm gonna accidentaly start singing along with him. That'd be a nice way to lose a job. Pure fuckin' awesome. Get that on youtube! I gets psycho killer Norman Bates! My producer slam, sharp like bam! Jump on stage, and then I dun-daaaah!
(I like the way you come)
Hey, baby, I like it rawww... Yeah baby, I like it RAWWW!!! Ooh, baby, I like it raww... Yeah baby, I like it RAWWW!!!

I will never understand how anyone can listen to a bunch of egocentric assholes like that boast about how great they are over a simple beat and pretend it's actually a song with some sort of thought put into it.

When did I say I hated crust, hahahaha.
Noisecore though... not too big on it!
Seriously though, rap/hip-hop is definitely my least favorite genre of music, so I'll just leave it at that and end my part of the discussion.

Mike Im super particular on my hip hop/rap. But Mike if you consider your self a fan of music in general and you havent heard it yet, please give Wu-Tangs 36 chambers a whurl. It is an awesome album. Im not big on ODB's solo stuff its ok but the dude cant hold my attention for that long. ODB did have an amazing flow.

NoMeansNo, Koenji Hyakkei I enjoy both of these also, a lot. As well as most Zeuhl, especially the great inventors Magma! Also the first Ruins album Stonehenge rules. A nice blend of Magma and MITB. The albums after that were a little too 90's rock for me.

Seriously though, rap/hip-hop is definitely my least favorite genre of music, so I'll just leave it at that and end my part of the discussion. I'm just playing devil's advocate, and saying your statement can be applied to both. egocentric assholes = hip hop dude talking about how rad they are, or generic hardcore band #9707 touting their version of lefty politics, which is clearly superior to everyone else. Hell, just making rock-punk-hip hop music in itself is pretty much an act of ego. Ego doesn't make something bad, in fact, it's usually what makes something awesome to it's target audience, and polarizing to the uninterested. No matter if it's Redman rhyming about his leet mic skillz or Tim Offensive yollering about strip mining. Same thing for simple beats and not music. Same could easily be said and true by someone who is not into grind / noisecore. Let's face it, there's even 'punks' who think grind + noisecore is shit. And again, it's hugely egocenric to think ppl want to hear you just make a bunch of noise. It's cool if you don't like hip hop, but there are some great hip hop bands. If Wu Tang isn't your thing, try some old Redman [Dare Iz A Darkside is amazing, bomb heavy beats, and funny-whimsical-smart ryhmes] or early Public Enemy for something serious and political. At best, I like @ a dozen hip hop artists, but there's still good albums to be found.

That's the difference though... people who listen to/play grind can typically accept and acknowledge that the music they play doesn't require a whole lot of talent, and is pretty dumb. I don't listen to any street punk garbage, so I stay away from the ego bands of punk in that respect, but any time rap doesn't have ego, it's just some nerdy white guy with a nasally voice talking about shit I couldn't care less about.
And I'm not going to listen to any more rap either, because my main problem with the music (aside from the fact that I can understand the garbage lyrics whether I like it or not, whereas with punk I only have to understand them at my own leisure) is that it just sounds like complete shit to me any way you slice it.

rap and hip hop has the same attributes as grind / fast music in general there are true underground artists that do shit DIY, bootleg, make tapes, etc. and then there are the ones on TV (lets compare them to insect warfare) who suck real bad, and ruin the genre for the rest.
i'm not really saying dig deeper because it seems your set in your ways, but expansion in music is better then compression.
on that note guilty pleasure music pt.2: 90s alternative various old rolling stones tracks (ruby tuesday in particular) BAAAAAD COMPANY Masonna

I've heard a fair amount of underground rap too, I can't say I care for it. I really did try for a long time, but I just don't like it.

Mike, I respect you for the fact that you tried it before you all in all wrote it off. A lot of people don't do that with music they automatically assume they will not like.

Most of the hiphop I listen to is loved by white hipsters. Faster abstract stuff... Busdriver, Doseone, El-P, Gift of Gab et al. It''s definitely something I gotta be in the mood for.

The albums after that were a little too 90's rock for me. For some reason I never really checked out Magma, even though I know they're a huge influence on a lot of bands I love. I should get around to doing that. NoMeansNo were my favourite band from when I was 12 til when I started getting into Cardiacs. Just saw them again last week, such a wicked live group. If you're into them and you haven't already, you should check out Pigment Vehicle, they were an obscure Victoria band in the 90's that were hugely influenced by them, but were even stranger and more technical. Ruins I like, but I don't have everything. The comp of their old singles is awesome though.

This was back in the earlier years of high school pretty much. I was sort of friends with a dude who was into that shit. I guess it also helps that Sage Francis is from here, to a point. Also, if people here like Ruins I hope they feel no guilt about it. Ruins rules!

I can get down with Nirvana. It's not anything I really seek out to listen to on my own time because I think they get boring real fast, but it doesn't bother me at all.

The good Nirvana songs are the ones where they try to be The Melvins (i.e., "Negative Creep"). I actually wish that Kurt Cobain lived the extra few weeks that would have put him in Greg Sage's studio to record Leadbelly songs outside of his label's knowledge. And on a somewhat similar note, I've been an avid Primus fan since I was 14. This is not guilty pleasure music. I had so much fun when I saw Primus last summer.
