I've been on a bit of a thrash kick lately, so I ask people here who may know, what are some essential thrash albums I should check out if I haven't already?

Voivod: War & Pain, Roar, and Killing Technology. Destruction: Infernal Overkill Dark Angel: Darkness Descends Nuclear Assault: Game Over
Those were some of my faves from the old school thrash metal era... And trying to not list any bands that were more death metal.

i will repeat things surely, but here goes...
KREATOR - endless pain/flag of hate/pleasure to kill/terrible certainty, extreme agression, coma of souls SODOM - in the sign of evil/obsessed by cruelty/expurse of sodomy/persecution mania DESTRUCTION - sentence of death/infernal overkill/eternal devastation DEATHROW - riders of doom / raging steel VIO LENCE - eternal nightmare DEATH ANGEL - the ultra violence HOLY TERROR - mind wars / terror and submission BLOOD FEAST - kill for pleasure TESTAMENT - the legacy FLOTSAM AND JETSAM - doomsday for the deceiver ASSASSIN - the upcoming terror SEPULTURA - schizophrenia / beneath the remains
tis the short list....
note: one of the best moments of recent Euro tour was warming up in Berlin playing along to Holy Terror on the PA. it made all the difference.

Testament's song "The New Order" absolutely kills it on guitar. I haven't heard anything else by that band, but used to love playing along to that song (still do).

Cool! I'd already been familiar with a couple titles mentioned in this thread, listened to some Kreator, in the middle of some Voivod now, have a couple other things in the queue. Thanks guys.

surprised nobody's mentioned Morbid Saint - Spectrum of Death also you can't really go wrong with Death - Scream Bloody Gore i consider both basically (early) Death Metal. though now its clearly pretty docile stuff compared to whats come since. also, totally forgot DARK ANGEL darkness descends on my list. (duh!) and... POSSESSED seven churchesVOIVOD is one of my favorite bands but i cant corral them with a genre tag.

I already have Possessed's Seven Churches and Beyond the Gates and like both of them a lot. I also have that Death stuff, haven't listened to it in ages though.

get your proto-thrash on... Night Sun - Mournin'
everything else I could think of was mentioned, except for Demolition Hammer (Skull Fracturing Nightmare through Tortured Existence), if Death is mentionable then so is Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness. Crumbsuckers were awesome, too bad they broke up and formed Pro-Pain. and r0flmywaffes was right, Fastkill is some wicked Japanese thrash metal.

Favorite thrash metal record is probably Sadus - Swallowed In Black. Close favorite, but moving a little into prog territory, would be Coroner. Fav record by them would be No More Color

Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness I don't know what happened to my copy of this. Makes me annoyed thinking about it.

Yea, that reminds me I always liked what I heard from Carnivore but never looked into them further.

I'm not sure if this is too obvious, but Cross Examination - The Hung Jury fucking rules. Menace to Sobriety is pretty good as well.

Had never heard Coroner before, really digging it though. Always wishing thrash metal could be just a bit faster.

CORONER at MDF is a reason to go. CARNIVORE is garbage. re: racist Peter Steele crud.
and SADUS - illusion/chemical exposure (the 1st LP) is the shit.
