I checked out Carnivore's Retaliation today, the music was awesome but there were definitely some things in the lyrics that made me kind of uncomfortable to listen to.
And I dig Cross Exam, I would just never tell anybody to check out that band in a serious inquiry about thrash kind of thread, you know?

I thought Retaliation sucked. I liked the first album.

No mention of Overkill, Venom, Sacrifice yet, maybe they are givens?
Sarcofago "INRI" is also worth checking out.

I haven't heard INRI yet but I do like Rotting.
I've been wanting to check out Venom for a long time but never knew where to start, where do I go?

for Venom, I really like Welcome to Hell, but it's got a little NWOBHM vibe to it. don't know if you'd dig that about it.

I thought Retaliation sucked. I liked the first album. Yeah, the first LP is more cheesy apocalyptic metal... The 2nd is all METAL. Like they had a really cool band and then started taking it too seriously. Venom: yes, Welcome to Hell. More death-proto-black than pure thrash maybe... But still fugly and awesome.

People make that same argument about S.O.D. (the first album being charming for not being serious and then when they released newer material 14 years later it sucked) but I like some of the tracks on Bigger Than The Devil more than Speak English or Die, so perhaps the same logic applies for Carnivore in my mind.

Some stuff that hasn't been listed:
Pestilence - "Malleus Maleficarum" and "Consuming Impulse" (although the latter is pretty much full-on early death metal, it's a total essential classic of the genre, and still pretty thrashy) Blind Illusion - "The Sane Asylum" (twisted prog-thrash, also notable for containing 2/3 of the future members of Primus) Razor - "Shotgun Justice" (my favorite Razor album, totally fucking pissed) Vio-lence - "Oppressing the Masses" (not as good as "Eternal Nightmare" IMO, more polished, but still really good) Believer - "Sanity Obscure" (excellent progressive thrash, sorta preachy Christian lyrics, although not as obnoxious as other bands of that ilk)

Demolition Hammer - Skull Fracturing Nightmare thru Epidemic of Violence Pretty sure DH was already mentioned but I can't stress how ripping that shit is.
Dark Angel - Darkness Descends Blazingly fast. Great record.
Slayer - Hell Awaits and Show No Mercy Praise of Death rips beyond awesome
Evildead - The Underworld and Annihilation Of Civilization

Venom - WTH seconded, also Black Metal. Sort of NWOBHMish I guess, but in a decent way.

And I dig Cross Exam, I would just never tell anybody to check out that band in a serious inquiry about thrash kind of thread, you know? Like I said, I knew it was obvious, and that you were looking for more classic albums, but figured you'd be doing yourself a disservice if you hadn't heard it. Also, seconded on Evil Dead - Annihilation of Civilization, listening to that myself rite meow.

Just from a quick read-through, I second Holy Terror and Demolition Hammer because love. A lot of the obvious classics don't need any additional mentions (DUDE REIGN IN BLOOD).
However, I am really surprised that no one mentioned Artillery's Terror Squad or Fear of Tomorrow. They should be essential.

why i skipped ( i think i may have referred to a 'short list') PESTILENCE's 1st or OVERKILL's 1st two. btw, the demo stuff just before 'feel the fire' is sick. (tho they are barely thrash) SACRIFICE torment in fire for sure. also, VECTOM speed revolution. so many so many so many.

And i think i can recommend Nailgunner also, hah:
And of course Sodom, Razor, Dark Angel and Demolition Hammer.

Checked out Coroner... fucking rules.
I mean, last.fm says this band gets labeled "the Rush of thrash metal" often, if I'd known that and didn't know anything else about the band I would have liked them just based on that description.

Seriously, this song. This is the most badass song ever. The guitar solo alone does it for me.
