I saw The Goon last night, I really liked it. It sorta reminded me of punch drunk love but with 100% more fights.

I usually don't even give these modern remakes of horror films a chance because, with a few exceptions, they blow (some may disagree but I enjoyed the remakes of TCM, Dawn of the Dead and Hills Have Eyes). But the new Evil Dead looks like it might be a pretty decent re-imagining of the original, especially with both Raimi and Campbell onboard as producers. Still not expecting anything great... or even good... but I'll at least make it a point to see this one based on the trailer. Seems like they're going to try and make it a genuinely scary movie and avoid the comedy aspect that was so unintentionally prevalent in the original. I think the fact that they're doing a "re-imagining" as opposed to a "re-make" will make it decent... or at least interesting to see what Raimi had in mind originally but didn't necessarily accomplish. The fact that he produced and didn't direct the film makes me wary but the guy who actually directed it has only done like 4 other films so I hope Raimi was heavy handed in his influence on how the film was shot etc. I wasn't a fan of the TCM remake, though it certainly could have been worse, but I agree that The Hills Have Eyes remake was pretty decent but I honestly don't think any of these movies are old enough to warrant a remake nor is the treatment the films are getting a justification of them being re-done. Remakes can work... see John Carpenter's The Thing... but that isn't how these modern remakes are being handled. UGH.

Yeah, remakes blow. I can deal with re-imagining because they just take the concept and run with it in a new light. The new TCM would have just been a sort of "meh" film but what really pushed it over the top was the dude from Full Metal Jacket. He was sadistic as fuck and set the mood long before Leatherface even shows up.
Also I didn't mention the Thing because it's not really modern at this point but god damn I love that movie. Except they actually did remake it again I think last year but it looked terrible and I heard it was.

Didn't realize they remade it again, fuck that.

That's what I always hear. I didn't hate it though. I see Kanal on your last list. How was that? I have only seen A Generation by that director ( I forget his name) but I really liked it.

I liked Prometheus. Good atmosphere, some cool gore but some parts were definitely a little wonky.
I got these recently and I haven't made the time to watch any of them, yet:
Brain Damage (1987) Humanoids from the Deep (1980) Snoop Dogg's Hood of Horror Merantau

I watched Fistful of Dollars last night for the first time in a while. I love the music, the colors, the textures, plus clint eastwood was a babe back then.

While I was home for 2 weeks with the new kid I caught up on some movie watching...
Dead Snow (I enjoyed this thoroughly, good modern zombie flick with nods to the greats (Evil Dead etc.) Lots of rad gore, nazi zombies, and some humorous touches that are played well enough to be funny without sending the film into "horror comedy" territory. Highly recommended as long as you don't mind subtitles.)
Battle Royale (Had heard a bunch of praise for it but I didn't think it was all THAT special. Most of the deaths were pretty plain but there were a few good parts. I wonder if the lady that wrote Hunger Games watched this movie first as the similarities are uncanny.)
Escape from LA (Rules)
The Cabin in the Woods (This was surprisingly good though I thought the ending/reason for the whole thing was dumb.)
Conan the Destroyer (As bad as this is I still love it.)
Colossal Squid (I have a mild fascination with Colossal/Giant Squid. This is a 2 part documentary about the dissection of the first live colossal squid ever caught. The dissection footage is kinda boring but the live footage the show of when an arctic fishing ship catches the thing is pretty rad. I didn't even watch the second part, it sounded boring(er).)
Last Days Here (As much an anti-crack/heroin psa as a documentary haha. I love Pentagram so it was pretty cool to hear past members they talk to recount different incidents over the course of the bands history.)

Wasn't one of the main guys in Dead Snow wearing an Evil Dead shirt the whole movie? I bought it a few years ago and recall enjoying it.
Also, Escape from LA 4 Life

All I took away from this is that Bobby Liebling is an immature crackhead who has to be taken care of by a multitude of people. The amount of grief he caused his fellow Pentagram members is unacceptable. I'd have snatched up that contract and simultaneously replaced him.

Yep, the number of opportunities he squandered is unreal, they should have been a HUGE band. Wasn't one of the main guys in Dead Snow wearing an Evil Dead shirt the whole movie? I bought it a few years ago and recall enjoying it. Also, Escape from LA 4 Life They talked about Evil Dead in the movie but I don't think he was wearing the shirt. He WAS however wearing a Braindead shirt for a good bit of it, including when his head was split in half.

Watched Black Snake Moan, Watership Down and The Outlaw Josey Wales recently. I enjoyed them all, but if I wasn't such a huge blues fan I would have thought black snake moan was just weird.

I watched Silver Linings Playbook and really enjoyed it. The plot is semi typical but the characters are damaged anuff for it to be really interesting and the ending was sweet.

Yeah, it was really more about Bobby's struggle than about Pentagram. Pentagram was almost just an excuse to do a doc about how fucked he is/was.

I saw Kick Ass 2 in the theater earlier tonight. Was pretty good, seemed a bit less story oriented than the first and definitely more violent. But lots of action to be had. Couldn't help but notice that every single movie preview I saw was for movies that looked so horrible that if I didn't know better, I would think they were comedy sketch skits.

You know, this is pretty much exactly what my brother and I said when we went to see it, even in regards to the previews. I also enjoyed the one-liners this time around more than I remember in the first one. Otherwise I borrowed a documentary from a co-worker called The Secret Glory, about some nazi dude named Otto Rahn who was part of the SS and searching for the holy grail until he was found to be Jewish and accused of being homosexual. Strange film.
