This other seed catalog sells 200 praying mantis eggs for $10, which I'm seriously considering. My cousin found a clutch of mantis eggs outside once and brought it indoors.... big mistake

Oh I would never do that, those things are super aggressive. I just think it'd be cool to occasionally see them around and have them keep the bad bugs away.

Hahaha, it's so awesome how he is articulate, but is ultimately more relatable to the area he is in because of his sort of street delivery. PLANT SOME SHIT!

I plan on building a mobile duck pen and getting some when it gets a bit warmer. There's a farm nearby that has ducklings. I thought about chickens, but ducks seem more fun.

depending on your objectives, you might be better off with chickens. this duck that we got is a pet.

depending on your objectives, you might be better off with chickens. this duck that we got is a pet. They'll be for eggs, I looked into it and certain breeds are just about as productive, but with a shorter season. They also don't roost, so that's another reason people usually don't bother.

How's everyone's garden going so far? I have radishes, leeks, kale, peppers, cardoons, tomatoes and scorzonera started. Not all have sprouted yet. Ramsons didn't work out, doesn't look like my shiso will either.

I tried planting all those Skittles in the ground just like the commercial said, but no rainbows yet.

Got the new Johnny's seed catalog about a month ago, lots of cool new stuff, think I'm going to order soon. Anyone know anything about these "flower sprouts"? Apparently a brussels/kale hybrid which sounds awesome, but the seeds are a bit pricey.

Johnny's is indeed cool, especially considering they do so much stuff for Elliot Coleman. don't know anything about the variety you're talking about. Dom, you should also look up Bountiful Gardens and get their catalog. LOTS of cool shit there, too.

Despite my father growing up in a family that killed/grew almost all of their own food, I know very little about growing food myself. I live on 1/5 of an acre (suburbs) and plan on starting a garden this year. I want for grow, for sure, cucumbers and hops.
Any general tips or books I should check into?

don't bite off more than you can chew the first year! try your public library for some general gardening books. buy started plants for a more sure start. talk to people in yur climate/ zone about planting and timing of harvest, etc. post any specific questions here, too.

George knows a bit about the local pests to look out for. If you want to plant squash, start them early in the Spring to avoid vine borers. We always use started plants to make things easier too.

Also, does anyone hunt? No one in my family really brings me venison anymore and I've been considering taking it up.
